The map collection at the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Science was founded in 1921. At present, the collection contains approximately 18,000 inventory items. A substantial part of the collection consists of documents published before 1850, referred to as old prints. The most valuable parts of the map collection are the first atlases by Abraham Ortelio from the second half of the sixteenth century and the unique Moravik collection.

Thanks to the TEMAP project (Technology for making map collections of the Czech Republic accessible) and in cooperation with the Moravian Regional Library and the library of the Faculty of Science of Charles University, were created conditions for the process of cataloging, digitising and making the map collection of the MU Department of Geography accessible via the Internet.

Digitalisation of maps up to A0+ format takes place on devices available at the Institute of Geography. All digitalised maps are provided with permanent unique identifiers and stored in such a way to ensure the best possible long-term protection. All digitalised maps, for which the copyright status allows it, are gradually made available online in full resolution in the web application. The accessible maps are provided with a visible watermark.
